If you think George and Murray split lead guitar duties in one of Portland’s myriad grunge bands, you’d be wrong. They’re actually Ashley George, administrative assistant at Beaverton’s Kuni BMW, and Lauren Murray, Holman’s Employee Engagement Coordinator in the top left corner of the U.S. They’ve created a fantastic volunteer opportunity for the people of our Portland- and Vancouver-area businesses — Kuni BMW, Kuni Auto Center, Kuni Lexus of Portland, and the Garage — and they’re looking to swell their ranks.
Ashley and Lauren have teamed up with SOLVE, a nonprofit that creates volunteer projects to improve Oregon’s environment and build a legacy of stewardship; the organization annually supports nearly 30,000 volunteers in 900 projects throughout the state. The Holman women and the nonprofit have created an undertaking just for the employees and families of these four businesses: clean up a portion of the Mary S. Young Park in West Linn, an important stretch of the Willamette River watershed.
Activities will include removing invasive species, mulching around newly planted native species, and picking up litter along this scenic stretch of the river. For those who share my pasty complexion, SOLVE says the work environment will be entirely shaded, so the day will be very comfortable with a very reduced risk of sunburn. And those with delicate hands, take heart: there’s no blackberry in the park, so no thorns.
