On June 3, the world-class, professional musicians of the West Jersey Chamber Symphony and West Jersey Chamber Chorale will perform settings of one of the Western music’s most admired sacred texts, the Magnificat. The text of the Magnificat is taken directly from the Gospel of Luke where it is spoken by Mary, pregnant with Jesus, to her cousin Elizabeth, pregnant with John the Baptist. Music will include interpretations by Bach, Schubert, Pachelbel, Pergolesi and Lietz.
Leitz’s setting is modern; Pergolesi’s, a precursor of the classical style; Pachelbel’s, baroque masterpiece; Schubert’s, a glorious romantic composition; and Bach’s is considered nearly perfect by musicologist’s worldwide. Using the full range of the Baroque chamber orchestra — strings, oboes, bassoon, flutes, high trumpets, tympani and organ — this rousing performance of the Bach Magnifcat is said to bring the spiritual realm closer to earth.
The performance will be in the Sanctuary of the First Presbyterian Church of Moorestown, 101 Bridgeboro Road. Buy tickets online HERE. Facility is accessible to people with disabilities.
